		<description>Oscar Balch House Redux, 2025

Designers: Kelly Bair &#38;amp; Kristy Balliet
Location: Oak Park, Illinois
Photography: BairBalliet
Contractor: Steve Matticks
Structural Engineering: John Daley

Originally designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1911 and considered his first “flat-roof” house, the Oscar Balch house was designed around a central linear datum from which living spaces are linked through enfilade. Renovated by BairBalliet in 2025 to accommodate a modern and evolving family, the house’s excessive horizontality, a trope of the prairie style though even more exaggerated here, provided a conceptual framework from which to design from. Intended to house anywhere from one to eight family members ranging in age from 5 to 75 years old, depending on the week, the original compartmentalized spaces on the lower level were spatially preserved for contrasting programmatic uses but conceptually linked through the design of windows, custom millwork, material finishes and lighting. The upper level restored a former door opening discovered in the original floor plans provided by the Frank Lloyd Wright Trust. Once the entry to one of the Balch’s separate sleeping quarters and later closets for the next inhabitants, the door was reopened to serve a direct connection between the primary bedroom and a new primary bathroom. The alteration both preserves and extends the historic lineage of the house but updates it for today’s inhabitants.&#60;img width="4032" height="3024" width_o="4032" height_o="3024" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/f7cfe33d5e757afde79a0bda5a7f6576f901e74a8a5652dcb922409ff3ab18e2/02_KitchenNook.jpg" data-mid="243102788" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/f7cfe33d5e757afde79a0bda5a7f6576f901e74a8a5652dcb922409ff3ab18e2/02_KitchenNook.jpg" /&#62;&#60;img width="3024" height="4032" width_o="3024" height_o="4032" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/84c84d89d3f1ddd3c0e00c384e770a6fcbc0753eff21c0d353096f5c854d0fe5/04_KitchenNook.jpg" data-mid="243102790" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/84c84d89d3f1ddd3c0e00c384e770a6fcbc0753eff21c0d353096f5c854d0fe5/04_KitchenNook.jpg" /&#62;&#60;img width="4032" height="3024" width_o="4032" height_o="3024" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/0725fda87bd16162cd19e57cb2e9fa7ddc9610ceecc32912cd424daba0200d75/05_KitchenBar.jpg" data-mid="243102791" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/0725fda87bd16162cd19e57cb2e9fa7ddc9610ceecc32912cd424daba0200d75/05_KitchenBar.jpg" /&#62;&#60;img width="4032" height="3024" width_o="4032" height_o="3024" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/52cc06d4a83470adbd873725347896c8a8d5a999926e0f3fbaaf25f4986a94b0/06_LivingRoom.jpg" data-mid="243102792" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/52cc06d4a83470adbd873725347896c8a8d5a999926e0f3fbaaf25f4986a94b0/06_LivingRoom.jpg" /&#62;&#60;img width="4032" height="3024" width_o="4032" height_o="3024" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/7d6d40798f20fe36c8fdc314b4702b94700b916ac19328c8a573d9ba707a3939/08_LivingRoom.jpg" data-mid="243102794" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/7d6d40798f20fe36c8fdc314b4702b94700b916ac19328c8a573d9ba707a3939/08_LivingRoom.jpg" /&#62;&#60;img width="4284" height="5712" width_o="4284" height_o="5712" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/91dd02d00c16ba1bed73335e53d181e8994d6836f483375a77908aaaf2f8829c/14_Bathroom.jpg" data-mid="243102802" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/91dd02d00c16ba1bed73335e53d181e8994d6836f483375a77908aaaf2f8829c/14_Bathroom.jpg" /&#62;&#60;img width="4284" height="5712" width_o="4284" height_o="5712" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/687709515da2b6b75054bb3d9df800ff3477af7721c245f869f4eb0c55160e8c/16_Bathroom.jpg" data-mid="243102804" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/687709515da2b6b75054bb3d9df800ff3477af7721c245f869f4eb0c55160e8c/16_Bathroom.jpg" /&#62;&#60;img width="3024" height="4032" width_o="3024" height_o="4032" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/9c0b580c8609fbfba553b702ce22616cb469f9c01b219b77136dd09c8a39eec0/17_Bedroom.jpg" data-mid="243102805" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/9c0b580c8609fbfba553b702ce22616cb469f9c01b219b77136dd09c8a39eec0/17_Bedroom.jpg" /&#62;&#60;img width="4032" height="3024" width_o="4032" height_o="3024" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/d294f2dfa22dbe8d26be6617c854f0866e77d46c8e1387dff715015108af7f37/13_LivingRoom.jpg" data-mid="243102801" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/d294f2dfa22dbe8d26be6617c854f0866e77d46c8e1387dff715015108af7f37/13_LivingRoom.jpg" /&#62;</description>

Crop Top is a series of partial rooms that encourage visitors to circulate in the round to continually crop their views of each other and the surrounding square. Composed of a circular roof and a set of vertical surfaces that range in widths from walls to columns, the project spatializes the literal technique of cropping as an act of framing views both around and above, between and through. Crop tops serve to both ration and highlight material. Conflating notions of visual framing with construction framing, it is fabricated using a partial framing system, where sheets (and their offcuts), rather than dimensional lumber, minimize material use for maximum effect. Designed for flat pack transport and ease of assembly/disassembly, Crop Top is fabricated using the precision of robotic cutting which allows for traditional (fastener and adhesive-free) detail connections. With its incomplete roof cladding, Crop Top is a nod to the trending (again) crop top shirt, a garment that uses subtraction to focus attention on the missing middle.

In 1926, the Oak Park Park’s District ran a design competition for a one room building. In 2024, with the same competition run anew, BairBalliet joins Frank Lloyd Wright in the losers circle. The circle, often located by its center but defined by its perimeter, is a symbol of unity and inclusion. Under One Roof is a proposal for a Field Center that encourages its users and visitors to both occupy the center and find overlaps in its contextual, spatial and programmatic tangencies. The Prairie Style, an architecture long embraced by Oak Park, is defined by strong geometries, natural materials, asymmetrical floor plans and characteristics that reinforce the horizontally of the midwestern prairie such as low roofs and deep eaves. Under One Roof suggests an updated prairie style through the large circular roof that envelopes the building massing below and blurs the line between interior and exterior as it offers playground visitors, school children, and Field Center users respite from the midwestern elements. Together, the building form, material use/reuse, and construction type reflects the innovative spirit associated with the Prairie Style movement.

IMPERFECTION, 2022

Imperfection was
commissioned as part of the Model Behavior Show curated by Cynthia Davidson. The
model is both a game board and a representation of domestic living modeled on
the evolving building codes that both encourage densification of the
single-family lot while questioning its contemporary validity. It models
scenarios for living both as individuals and as a collective through the
evolving migration of unstable cores that escape the confines of their domestic
boundaries to contribute to the neighborhood at large.

WRITER’S BLOCK, 2021
Studio City, California

Writer’s
Block is a 1,200 sf Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) that formalizes the social
space of the main house as it is situated along the side yard between an
existing outdoor patio space and a pool. Designed around client-specific work
and play desires the building functions as a 9-seat state-of-the-art theatre
with an adjacent projection room as well as two outdoor rooms to accommodate
gardening and dining. The upper level features a workspace for a screenwriter
and an interior dining and living area. Starting with a black box theatre
typology the project reveals interior domestic moments that allow natural light
into the upper level writing loft as well exterior alcoves that offer views out
to the social scenarios unfolding below.
