WRITER’S BLOCK, 2021

Writer’s Block is a 1,200 sf Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) that formalizes the social space of the main house as it is situated along the side yard between an existing outdoor patio space and a pool. Designed around client-specific work and play desires the building functions as a 9-seat state-of-the-art theatre with an adjacent projection room as well as two outdoor rooms to accommodate gardening and dining. The upper level features a workspace for a screenwriter and an interior dining and living area. Starting with a black box theatre typology the project reveals interior domestic moments that allow natural light into the upper level writing loft as well exterior alcoves that offer views out to the social scenarios unfolding below.
